Steps of benchmarking

The SCORmark benchmarking program allows Supply Chain Council members to exchange benchmarking information. A tutorial is available to learn how to identify supply chains and prioritize metrics for each supply chain. The program requires you to collect the data for each supply chain you want to benchmark and submitting that data.

Steps of benchmarking

The table below lists the 8 steps to complete the SCORmark benchmarking program.

  Step   Activity Resources
1 Identify Supply Chain(s)
SCORmark benchmarking is done by supply chain. Submitting data over multiple supply chains or at overall company level results in unpredictable/undesired results. The benchmarking tutorial clarifies how supply chains can be identified within a business, line-of-business, or division.

2 Collect demographic information
In order to match your supply chain to the right peer group we use demographic information. SCORmark uses four attributes to determine the demographic peer group:
  • Industry classification* based on NAICS code;
  • Size (Annual revenue for the supply chain);
  • Capability model (Make-to-Stock, Make-to-Order, Engineer-to-Order, or Retail);
  • Geographic location

* A separate question will ask you if you prefer to benchmark in a different industry.

3 Determine strategic objectives
For each performance attribute determine strategic target (Superior, Advantage or Parity), in order to calculate the relative distance to the strategic objectives the supply chain needs to support. The benchmarking tutorial describes how strategic objectives are determined for each supply chain.

4 Collect metrics data
This is where you will probably spend most time for your benchmarking project. Review the SCOR definitions, determine how to interpret the SCOR definitions for your supply chain. In the SCOR Framework training data collection is discussed in detail. Check your ERP system documentation for SCOR metrics - vendors such as SAP and Oracle are members and have integrated or are in the process of integrating SCOR metrics in their reporting tools.

5 Enter the data and submit
To enter your benchmark click the benchmark button and click 'Submit your benchmarking data now' in the new window. The questionnaire starts with collecting the demographic information your collected in steps 1 and 2. Make sure to include a reference to the supply chain in the Company field. That information will never be visible to other companies.
Members of affiliated associations (APICS, ISM, DMSCA) please select your association in the "How did you hear about this survey?" to expedite acceptance of your submission.
6 APQC/SCC will validate your eligibility to participate
Please note that viewing the metrics and/or questions and submission of data is not restricted. Participation is limited to SCC members and members of affiliated organizations.
7 APQC will validate your submission ('initial report')
Data submitted by eligible companies is not automatically added to our database. Each submission will be validated by a member of the APQC benchmarking validation team. For this purpose an 'initial report' is created. This initial report contains non-SCOR calculations for the purpose of validation of the data. You will be contacted by the APQC validation team. They may provide the initial report with some questions regarding the calculations of the numbers submitted.
